Retaining walls are essential for managing changes in ground level within your garden, whether you need to create a level terrace on a sloping site, support a raised bed or patio, or prevent soil erosion. At F&D Landscapes, we design and build retaining walls across Bedford and surrounding areas using a range of materials including concrete blocks, natural stone, railway sleepers, and gabion baskets.

The choice of material depends on the height of the wall, the load it needs to support, and the aesthetic you want to achieve. For low decorative walls (up to 600mm), railway sleepers or dry stone walling can create a rustic, natural look. For taller structural walls, we use reinforced concrete block or engineered masonry systems with proper drainage, weep holes, and foundations designed to withstand the lateral earth pressure.

All our retaining walls are built on adequate foundations with appropriate drainage behind the wall to prevent hydrostatic pressure build-up. We can render, clad, or cap retaining walls to match your property or garden style, and incorporate planting pockets, lighting, or seating into the design for added functionality.
